C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 book is here
Posted by JLP on August 19th, 2006
After a couple of weeks of travelling across the Atlantic ocean the book C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 was finally delivered into my hands this morning. Quite a nice timing actually. Today the first development snapshot of KDE4 was released. KDE 4 will be based on Qt 4.2, so this book will also be of great benefit for learning programming for KDE 4. Another nice thing is that authors of the book have added a short chapter about embedded programming with Qtopia (a special version of Qt for embedded devices). This is nice because more and more mobile phones and devices are nowadays running on Linux. A couple of days ago Trolltech introduced the world’s first fully open and programmable mobile development device Qtopia Greenphone. It attracted a lot of interest from developers all over the world. So I guess it will only be beneficial in the future to also have some knowledge about programming in Qtopia. Now I only have to read and learn. When I finish (won’t be that soon) I will write a review of the book.

Well you are not missing too much. It only means that you will have to write the code yourself and this may even help you to remember things better. Even if I have all the source code on the CD I write the code by hand when following examples in books like this.

Yes, I’d type most code by hand.
It’s a bother to copy & past code in ultraedit then remove each line number in column mode.

The copy of source code examples for download will realy help. It steals time for quick learning to write all this code by hands. As wel there is no the source code issue only. I mean the resource files, icons, e.t.c.
The book is perfect and it is very convenient to get it as e-book (save the forest :).

The examples source code is available on ED2K network (use aMule, eMule programs to search for it) And I’m sure you can also find the e-book on ED2K. But remember that it is illegal.
Good documentation is also on the official Qt homepage:
Qt 4.2 Reference Documentation
Also take a look at Community Resources to find a list of webpages and forums related to Qt.

Hi JLP, it is not illegal to download the e-book. The book (and e-book) are under the “Open Publication License, v1.0″, which allows redistribution and modification. I suppose the whole point is getting people to know Qt, using it and raking in cash from sales of Qt licenses to closed-source projects, rather than raking in cash on a book (which is usually little anyway). Cheers!

Federico:
You are right about the license. I completely forgot about it. I know that the same book for Qt3 was released in PDF format for free after 6 months (if I remember correctly) after the publication date. So this new version should also get released any day now. I guess it is really nothing wrong if I provide the direct ED2K links for the book and the source code:

@ SV:
Probably there are, but I didn’t look for other links. Is there any problem with the provided links?

Thanks a lot JLP for the ed2k links. It really helps having the examples at hand, the book only touches on extracts of code in later chapters.

January 29th, 2008 at 23:04:43
@G.u
Install KchmViewer and you should be able to read CHM just fine in Linux. And yes the copyright printed inside the book indicates that it is perfectly legal to share this book.

You don’t need emule or othere p2p programs to access the source files. You simply need connecting to http://www.informit.com, registering and clicking on “other media”. You don’t even need to own a hardcopy of the book!
